Heat Pump Repair in Alpine, NJ for Systems That Ice Up, Blow Cold or Lean on Backup Heat

A heat pump runs in both seasons, which makes its problems a little more complex. Our certified technicians test refrigerant, defrost controls, the reversing valve and auxiliary heat to find what is really going wrong.

  • Heating and cooling modes
  • EPA 608 certified

Understanding Heat Pump Problems Before Fixing Them

In heating mode, a heat pump pulls heat from outdoor air even when it feels cold outside. When any link in that process weakens, the system either struggles or hands the job to expensive backup heat.

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. A reversing valve changes the direction of refrigerant flow so the outdoor coil either rejects heat in summer or absorbs it in winter. Because the same compressor, coils and refrigerant do the work year round, a heat pump accumulates more operating hours than a cooling-only system, and its problems can show up in one mode, the other, or both.

Frost on the outdoor coil during winter is normal. The system is designed to melt it periodically with a defrost cycle, during which the unit briefly switches to cooling mode, the outdoor fan stops, and you may see steam rising from the coil. Problems start when the unit becomes encased in solid ice. That can come from a failed defrost control board or sensor, low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, a failed outdoor fan motor, or water from a gutter dripping onto the unit and freezing.

Auxiliary heat, usually electric heat strips in the air handler, supplements the heat pump in very cold weather and during defrost. It is far more expensive to run. If your energy bills jump or the thermostat shows auxiliary heat running for long stretches in mild weather, the heat pump itself may not be doing its share. Thermostat setup is a frequent culprit, as are refrigerant problems and airflow restrictions that reduce capacity.

Our diagnosis starts with the basics: filter condition, indoor airflow, outdoor coil cleanliness and thermostat configuration. We then measure refrigerant pressures and temperatures to calculate superheat and subcooling, test the reversing valve solenoid and observe whether the valve shifts fully, check capacitors and motor amperage, and force a defrost cycle to confirm the board, sensor and outdoor fan relay respond correctly.

Refrigerant work is handled only by EPA Section 608 certified technicians. If the system is low on refrigerant, there is a leak, and simply adding more is a temporary measure at best. We locate the leak, explain whether it can be repaired, and give you the price before proceeding. Recently manufactured heat pumps often contain A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, which are mildly flammable, and our technicians follow the specific handling practices those refrigerants require.

Heat pump running on backup heat?

We treat the heat pump and the thermostat as one system. Many repeat calls for backup heat or poor comfort trace back to control settings that were never matched to the equipment, and we correct them as part of the visit when needed.

Call and describe what you see on the thermostat and at the outdoor unit. We will schedule a technician trained on heat pumps.

Heat Pump Symptoms Worth a Service Call

Some of these are urgent, others are early warnings. All of them are easier to fix sooner than later.

Outdoor unit covered in ice. Light frost is normal, but solid ice across the coil and fan means defrost is failing or refrigerant is low.

Cool air in heating mode. Air that feels lukewarm or cold can indicate a reversing valve stuck in cooling position or low refrigerant charge.

Auxiliary heat running constantly. Long periods of backup heat in moderate weather usually point to a capacity problem or a thermostat setup issue.

Loud grinding or rattling. Mechanical noises from the outdoor unit can signal a failing fan motor, loose panels or compressor trouble.

Short cycling. Frequent starts and stops strain the compressor and may come from electrical faults, refrigerant issues or oversizing.

Stuck in one mode. A system that heats but will not cool, or the reverse, often has a reversing valve or control wiring problem.

How We Repair a Heat Pump, Step by Step

Heat pump repairs require patience, because some faults only appear in one mode or during defrost.

  1. Airflow and controls review

We check filters, blower operation, the outdoor coil and thermostat settings for heat pump and auxiliary heat staging.

  2. Refrigerant measurements

Pressures and line temperatures are recorded in the current mode to calculate superheat and subcooling.

  3. Mode and defrost testing

The reversing valve is cycled and a defrost cycle is initiated to confirm sensors, board and fan respond.

  4. Electrical testing

Capacitors, contactors, motors and heat strip circuits are tested for correct voltage and amperage.

  5. Quote and repair

You approve the flat-rate price, then we complete the repair, including leak repair and recharge when applicable.

  6. Two-mode verification

Where conditions allow, we verify operation in both heating and cooling before leaving.

What a Heat Pump Repair Visit Covers

Standard checks performed alongside the specific repair.

  • Superheat and subcooling calculations
  • Reversing valve operation check
  • Forced defrost cycle test
  • Outdoor fan and compressor amperage readings
  • Auxiliary heat strip and sequencer test
  • Thermostat configuration review
  • Outdoor coil and condensate inspection
  • Written record of readings

Why Our Heat Pump Repairs Hold Up

Readings are recorded before and after the repair, so you and any future technician can see how the system was performing and what changed.

Our technicians carry the gauges, temperature clamps and electronic leak detectors a heat pump diagnosis demands, and they log the numbers so you can compare them against future visits.

Repair Costs and the Repair or Replace Question

Electrical repairs such as capacitors, contactors and defrost sensors are usually modest. Reversing valve replacement and compressor replacement are major repairs because the refrigerant must be recovered, components brazed in, and the system evacuated and recharged. Leak repairs vary widely depending on where the leak is located.

When a heat pump is older and facing a major repair, we show you the repair cost next to replacement options. Newer cold-climate heat pumps may heat more effectively at lower outdoor temperatures, which can reduce reliance on auxiliary heat.

Never keep adding refrigerant to a leaking system without finding the leak. It costs more over time, and it can damage the compressor.

Keeping a Heat Pump Efficient Between Repairs

A heat pump works hard in both seasons, so the habits below pay off twelve months a year. They also make the next service visit faster because the basics are already in order.

Give the outdoor unit room to breathe

Keep shrubs, fencing and stored items at least a couple of feet from every side of the cabinet so air moves freely across the coil.

Let defrost do its job

A cloud of vapor and a pause in fan operation during winter are normal parts of the defrost cycle. Pouring hot water on the coil or chipping ice away can bend fins and damage tubing.

Watch roof runoff above the unit

A missing gutter can pour water onto the cabinet, where it freezes solid. Redirecting that runoff prevents repeated icing that defrost alone cannot clear.

Avoid big thermostat setbacks in cold weather

Raising the setpoint several degrees at once often calls in the electric backup heat. Smaller changes, or a thermostat with adaptive recovery, keep the heat pump doing most of the work.

Change filters on schedule

Restricted airflow lowers capacity in heating and cooling alike. Check the filter monthly during heavy use and replace it whenever it looks gray.

Note the emergency heat light

If the thermostat shows auxiliary or emergency heat running for long stretches in moderate weather, call for service before the power bill arrives.

Heat Pump Owners on Their Service Calls

Customer comments after heat pump repairs.

Our electric bill nearly doubled in January. The technician found a failed defrost sensor and a thermostat setting that kept the heat strips on. The bill dropped right back down.

Kevin J.Defrost and control repair

The outdoor unit looked like a block of ice. They found a failed fan motor, replaced it, and ran a defrost test before leaving.

Samantha C.Iced outdoor coil

They located the leak at a service valve instead of just topping off the refrigerant like the last company did.

Heat Pump Repair Questions We Answer Often

Clear answers about how heat pumps behave and when to call.

Usually not. During a defrost cycle, the coil warms to melt frost and the moisture can look like steam. If the unit stays iced over after defrost, call for service.

Heat pumps deliver air that is warm but not as hot as a gas furnace, so it can feel cooler on your hand even when the system is working correctly. A problem is more likely if rooms stop reaching the set temperature.

Emergency heat turns off the heat pump and uses only the backup heat source. It is meant for times when the heat pump has failed. Running it routinely is costly.

No. A heat pump runs through the winter and needs open airflow. Keep snow, ice and debris clear of the unit and make sure water does not drip onto it from the roof.

The solenoid coil can often be replaced on its own. If the valve body itself is stuck or leaking internally, the valve must be replaced, which involves refrigerant recovery and brazing.

Because heat pumps run in both seasons, a maintenance visit before heating season and another before cooling season is a good practice.
